My work is focused on history matching of reservoir models. History matching is a crucial step for developing reliable earth models that can be used, for example, for hydrocarbon in place estimation and for production forecast and optimisation. In some senses, history matching is quite close to a weather forecast problem and similar methods are often used.

History matching covers a broad range of mathematical, engineering and software topics. Working on this project was a natural transition for me when I started at the GRC in 2005 after a PhD and working in software development and subsurface flow modelling consultancy. Since then, I’ve been working on several interesting projects and used different deterministic and stochastic approaches including ensemble Kalman filter, genetic and evolutionary algorithms and classical gradient based methods.

The GRC provides a great environment facilitating communication between geoscience disciplines. This is especially important for history matching which is an inverse problem that is common for all disciplines. Also many methods have strong links with geostatistics. Dealing with all these subjects provides exciting opportunities to broaden knowledge and strengthen skills. Collaboration with colleagues at the headquarters and subsidiaries as well as interaction with universities and partners allows us to build a strong network within the company, industry and academia.
