At the St Fergus Gas Terminal we have voluntarily adopted the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) registration and have achieved ISO14001 certification.
We monitor air quality to ensure that our local concentrations of atmospheric pollutants are within the set limits set. Our air quality measurements match levels in other remote and rural sites within the UK and the concentration of pollutants are at a lower level than those measured in urban environments.
We’re working hard to keep our atmospheric emissions to a minimum. Our flare reduction strategy includes switching to nitrogen purging of our flares, and we aim to control our combustion emissions by maximising energy efficiency. We are also participating in the European Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS), and have introduced more accurate systems for measurement of our emissions.
Rainwater and water generated on site are collected by a network of site drains and routed to the terminal’s Water Treatment System before being discharged to the public sewer. The water discharged is regulated by the site’s integrated pollution control Authorisation from the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA). The quality of the water discharged is regularly monitored on site to ensure compliance.
We continuously strive to reduce the amount of waste we generate, to find opportunities for re-use of materials, to increase the amount of recycling we do, and to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill. Our recycling rates increase every year, and are higher than average rates for UK householders.
